Permission Secured for Rural Worker’s Dwelling on Dartmoor

Wreyland Rural Planning has secured permission for a temporary rural worker’s dwelling at Reed Farm, Christow, within Dartmoor National Park.

The dwelling will support a new specialist calf-rearing enterprise handling approximately 1,100 calves each year, with up to 400 young animals present at any one time. Calves arriving at between two and fourteen days old require close supervision, regular feeding and the ability to respond rapidly to illness, equipment failure or other emergencies.

The application demonstrated a genuine functional need for a stockperson to live on the holding and showed that the developing enterprise had been properly planned and was financially capable of being sustained.

The modest two-bedroom timber dwelling will be positioned beside the existing livestock buildings, allowing the worker to remain within sight and sound of the animals. Its scale, materials and siting were carefully considered to protect Dartmoor’s landscape character, tranquillity and dark night skies.

The permission enables an experienced young farmer to establish an independent agricultural enterprise while securing high standards of livestock husbandry and the continued productive use of the holding.
