Cotswolds lollygagging

I was trundling between jobs yesterday and in between downpours went through Lower Swell where my progress was arrested by the charming little Church of St Mary's...

From the roadside the building looked pretty standard 15th century fodder with substantial 19th century alterations, but on approaching via the churchyard I was met with this stunning Norman doorway which needed to be shared. Historic England describes the tympanum being framed with continuous chip-carved diapering with ten stones wedged together and cut into a flat arch. At the centre of all this is the Tree of Life with a dove picking at its fruit, which appears for unknown reasons to be unfinished...
